Part of Highway in Turkey Affected by Landslide

The highway between two city in Turkey has been affected by Landslide in last year...

This highway exist for many years, I am also using this highway infrequently since 2009. As far as I can learn from the locals, highway has been affecting by landslide for many years. It can be seen in the photograph, affected part of highway has been repaired many times.

After significant failure of the landslide in 2016, highway department decided to re-route the road and construct a 2km new road at the south of the existing road. Huge amount of cutting and filling have been performed to construct the road. I think rehabilitating of this landslide is cheaper than re-routing. It is significant that landslide has been triggered by off-loading the toe area during road widening and improvement works. By off-loading the head, implementing proper surface drainage and improving the river bank at the down side of landslide, this landslide can be stopped. Of course ground investigation required to determine properties / parameters of the failure surface and landslide material to modelling and analyzing the landslide.

The amount of the failure can be seen by looking backscarp and heaving on toe area, in the following photo. I compared the two photos that I took about 7 months apart, and the height of the backscarp is increased about couple tens centimeters, means mass movement is still on going.
